She is very often shown as a virgin with a pair of scales, a sword and a blindfold, which was an invention of the 15th century. Before the Middle Ages the Roman goddess spoke law "in dubio pro reo" with opened eyes. Even she was having a blindfold she was holding it in one of her hands. Her other hand was holding the sword. The first display of Lady Justice with her blindfold covering her eyes was made by Hans Gieng in 1543. The display made by the Swiss Renaissance sculptor is standing on top of the Fountain of Justice. The blindfold of Lady Justice is a sign for the incorruptibility of the law. Furthermore Lady Justice is the represent personification of law and justice.
